Sanomalehti New York Times jakoi Twitterissä uutisen saatetekstillä, jossa Yhdysvaltain Bagdadin suurlähetystöön hyökänneitä mielenosoittajia kutsuttiin ”surijoiksi”.
– Sadat irakilaiset surijat yrittivät tuhota Yhdysvaltain suurlähetystöä Bagdadissa huutaen ”Alas USA!” vastauksena tällä viikolla tapahtuneisiin tappaviin amerikkalaisiin ilmaiskuihin, jotka tappoivat 25 taistelijaa, New York Times kirjoitti Twitterissä.
Tviitti herätti pahennusta, kun sanomalehden syytettiin toistavan Iranin propagandaa.
USA:n ulkoministeri Mike Pompeo sanoi, että kyseessä olivat terroristit.
– Nämä hyökkääjät ovat Hizbollahin kannattajia. Hizbollah on terroristijärjestö, suurlähettiläs Richard Grenell kommentoi Twitterissä.
– ”Surijat?” Tämä on surkeaa tietämättömyyttä tai tahallisesti harhaanjohtavaa. Mielenosoittajat olivat Iranin tukemia joukkoja, mukaan lukien Kata’ib Hizbollah, konservatiivisen Heritage Foundation -ajatushautomon John Cooper tviittasi.
New York Times ei ole kommentoinut tai poistanut tviittiään, mutta jakoi saman artikkelin myöhemmin erilaisella saatetekstillä. Toisessa tviitissä kerrotaan, että mielenosoittajat murtautuivat suurlähetystön tiloihin ja sytyttivät tiloissa tulipaloja.
Tuhannet mielenosoittajat rynnivät uudenvuodenaattona Yhdysvaltain Irakin-suurlähetystölle. Mielenosoittajat protestoivat amerikkalaisten tekemiä ilmaiskuja ja sytyttivät muun muassa lähetystön muurin tuleen.
